How to change formation on FPL

In this article, we’re going to guide you through step-by-step how to change your formation on Fantasy Football.

1. Go to the pick team section

To make substitutes and change formation, you’ll need to go the pick team section on the FPL app/website.

2. Select a player to remove from your team

Click/tap the player that you would like to remove from the squad, and select switch(on the website) or substitute(on the app).

3. Substitute with a player from a different position

Now you’ve selected a player, you’ll need to swap them with a player in the different position.

Luis Diaz, a midfielder, is selected and which means we can substitute him either of the two defenders, Trippier or Williams, to change formation.

4. Confirm and save the change of formation

Once you’ve made the substitution and change of formation, you’ll need to save the changes on the Fantasy Football app or website.

We substituted Luis Diaz(Midfielder) for Kieran Trippier(defender) which changed our formation from 3-4-3 to 4-3-3.

Formation rules in Fantasy Football

Although you can easily change formation on fantasy football, you must ensure the 15 players in your squad meet the following criteria:

General FPL Team Limitations

  • 11 players on the starting XI
  • 4 players on the bench.

Goalkeeper Limitations

  • 1 Goalkeeper in the starting XI
  • 2 Goalkeepers in entire squad.

Defender Limitations

  • A minimum of 3 defenders must be in the starting 11.
  • A maximum of 5 defenders can be in your starting 11.

Midfielder Limitations

  • A minimum of 2 midfielders must be in the starting 11.
  • A maximum of 5 midfielders can be in your starting 11.

Forward Limitations

  • A minimum of 1 forward must be in the starting 11.
  • A maximum of 3 forwards can be in your starting 11.

Taking into account the limitations above, here are all of the possible formations you can have in FPL:

  • 3-5-2
  • 3-4-3

What is the best formation in FPL?

The best formation to choose in the fantasy football will vary from year-to-year. During the 22/23 season, “big at the back” formations, such as 5-4-1 and 5-3-2 have been popular as there are very high point-scoring full-back defenders, such as Alexander-Arnold, Cancelo and James.
