In Fantasy Premier League football, you can have a squad of 15 players. 11 of these players are outfield, and the remaining 4 are your substitutes. Your FPL formation will dictate what type of players you have on the bench (Defender, Midfielder, Attacker).
There are two types of substitutions in Fantasy Football:
- Manual Substitutions – The manager replaces an outfield player with one of 4 substitutes on the bench before the game week starts. Manual substitutions are not possible during the game week.
- Automatic Substitutions – The FPL app automatically replaces an outfield player with a sub from the bench. This happens when a outfield player doesn’t feature in a game.
When are substitutions used in fantasy football?
Automatic substitutions occur when an outfield player doesn’t play, and manual substitutions are decided by the manager of the team. The manual substitutions can be used if a outfield player has a tough fixture, an injury or a substitute player on the bench is preferred.
Do subs get points in FPL?
The points substitute players score don’t contribute to your total score unless the bench boost chip is activated. The only other time that points count from the bench is when an outfield player doesn’t play, and in this instance will be replaced with a substitute.
Substitute Bench Order
If any of your outfield players don’t feature during the game week, the Fantasy Football App will automatically choose an available substitute player that is furthest to the left. So, make sure you place your most preferred FPL substitutes in order of priority from left-to-right.
Goalkeepers can only be replaced by the substitute goalkeeper on the bench.

How do automatic substitutions happen in FPL?
